Former Olympian Antonio Pettigrew was found dead on Tuesday morning. The assistant North Carolina Tar Heels track coach was found in his vehicle.
A cause of death has not been made available.
Pettigrew, 42, was a member of the 1,600-meter U.S. relay team that took the gold in the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia, but the IOC later took away the medals after Pettigrew admitted to doping during a hearing against former coach Trevor Graham.
Pettigrew had been with North Carolina for four year, after graduating from St. Augustine’s in Raleigh back in 1993.
North Carolina athletics director Dick Baddour issued a statement saying that the university was “deeply saddened” by Pettigrew’s passing.
“I was particularly impressed with the relationships he established with our student-athletes and the pride he took in representing the University of North Carolina,” Baddour said.
Pettigrew is survived by Cassandra, his wife, and his son, Antonio Pettigrew Jr.
